Sidecar Racing Legends Webster and Hewitt Back on Track

By March 16, 2015 Uncategorized

Triple world sidecar racing champions Steve Webster and Tony Hewitt return to the race track for the first time together in 26 years when they ride at Mallory Park on Friday 27 March in a test day for the British Historic Racing BEAR’s Championship.

Webster and Hewitt dominated the World scene, taking the crown in three successive years, 1987-1989, and now they are all set to return to action at the Leicstershire circuit as part of a drive by the BEAR’s sidecar racing fraternity to raise awareness of their branch of the sport which offers cost effective action.

“Tony and I are greatly looking forward to getting that bike into sixth round Gerard’s,” said Webster, MBE, who went on to take no less than ten world titles.  Now, in rather different machinery to that in which he conquered the world, the Yorkshireman relishes the opportunity of riding the outfit prepared by reigning BEAR’s Champion Phil Jones, who is known to most in the paddock as “Slow Phil.”

The BEAR’s championship using bikes of British, European or American manufacturer and Webster and Hewitt will be relying on BWM power for their return on a day when members of the public contemplating taking up the sport will not only be able to meet up and have a chat, but also experience the thrills of the circuit themselves.

Sidecar crews will be giving would be racers the chance to live the dream during the day on a free of charge basis, though subject to payment of an insurance premium of £13 per person.

The return of Webster and Hewitt promises to be something special, and not to be missed, as they provide instant nostalgia amid a day of action as the competitors in the British Historic Racing series use the day to prepare for their opening meeting of the season at Mallory Park over the weekend of 11-12 April.

Admission to the test day on Friday 27 March (the only occasion to see Webster and Hewitt in action) is £3 while admission to the British Historic Racing meeting on 11-12 April is priced at £12 per day, or if tickets are purchased online in advance at £10 per day.
